What is a dental crown?
A dental crown is essentially an artificial tooth. It serves as a permanent restoration for a damaged tooth.
Crowns, also called “caps,” are hollow covers that cement directly over existing teeth (or what is left of them). They are custom-made with porcelain to match your existing teeth. A well-made cap will look and function just like a regular tooth.
What does a dental crown do?
Caps serve two main purposes:
- Restoring strength and functionality. Sometimes, our teeth lose their structural integrity. Damage renders them weak and unable to function properly. Caps strengthen what is left of your natural tooth and prevent it from having to be extracted.
- Improving aesthetic appearance. Caps cover teeth that are discoloured, cracked, misshapen, etc.
Note that caps usually cover your natural teeth. This is possible because the root is there to hold it in place.
In some cases, the entire tooth is gone (root included). Patients will get dental implants in their jawbone to act as artificial roots. The good news is that dental implants can hold caps in place.

Laboratory-made crowns
If you need a laboratory-made cap, you’ll have to come in for two appointments.
During your first appointment, we’ll prep your tooth. This involves removing any decay, reshaping, and filing. Then, we will take an impression of your tooth and fit you with a temporary crown.
At the second appointment, which is usually about a week later, we replace the temporary one with the laboratory-made one. It should fit perfectly because it is modelled after the impression, but we will make any necessary adjustments before cementing it.
